Tantrums are most common during the second year of life when children are typically rapidly acquiring language, but are able to understand more than they can express.

Behaviour problems are typically found in around half of children with speech and language delays. However, such problems may be more strongly related to language disorders rather than simply delayed speech development. School-aged children (aged 6–11 years) with language delay are described as having low self-confidence, low self-esteem and being socially withdrawn (Haynes and Naidoo 1991). It is interesting to note that problems indicating high levels of frustration and aggression are more common in younger children and tend to decline with time, whilst difficulties of a more socio-emotional nature remain, or increase.

A strong predictor of academic success is the level of hearing loss, as is socioeconomic status (Geers and Moog 1989; Mayberry 2002), but even then there are always notable individual exceptions to the rule. Much research has focused on the reading achievements of deaf children. One of the most frequently quoted findings in the literature is that the average deaf 16-year-old is able to read at the level of a hearing nine-year-old. Whilst this generalization has some validity, as with most generalizations, it obscures more than it informs us.
