Many of the best Freudian analysts, together with within the early days, Jung, Adler, Reich and Rank, tried to hyperlink the writings of Nietzsche with the medical paintings of Freud. yet what was once Nietzsche to Freud--an intuitive anticipation, a precursor, a rival psychologist? Assoun strikes past the seduction of those appealing analogues to a deeper research of the relation among those figures.

Now, the label Wille zur Macht, wherein Nietzsche undeniably engages the ultimum verbum of his thought, also designates a sort of 'enigma', Nietzsche's philosophical thing-initself; it is the metapsychological evaluation, the Beurteilung of the concept which Freud brings into play. We should emphasize that Nietzsche, who previously was explicitly solicited to support certain articles of theory (see above, 'Nietzsche, TTiefenpsycholog Before the Fact'), is never cited by name here, in the decisive passages in Freud's texts of the 1920s, where the notion of'Will to Power' appears.

During a previous meeting of the Society (on 1 April 1908), Freud mentioned his vain attempts to read Nietzsche (an echo of his Tragheit, the 'inertia' mentioned in his 1900 letter to Fliess), but this time, it is Nietzschean knowledge which is in question. Freud does not speak about Nietzsche as merely one philosopher among others, nor as a simple object of a diagnostic; rather, the 'diagnosis' itself leads to an astonishing homage. To say that 'the degree of introspection attained by Nietzsche had never been attained by anyone before him, and doubtless will never be again,' is to declare that 'the Case of Nietzsche' demonstrates, if not the success of self-analysis, otherwise held to be impossible, then at the very least a sort of'monstrous lucidity' about the Self.
