There isn’t a man in baseball who isn’t happiest when he’s up there at the plate with a stick in his hand. But it was pitching which took my time in Boston. And one of the proudest records I hold to this day is that of having pitched the most consecutive scoreless innings in World Series play. RUTH ARRIVES IN BOSTON Ruth got off the train at Boston’s Back Bay Station and headed immediately for a nearby diner to have breakfast with his teammates Ernie Shore and Ben Egan.
On his first day in Boston, Ruth played his first major-league game against the Cleveland Indians. He had a notable play in his very first Ruth in the Majors Babe Ruth and Helen Woodford are shown in their 1914 wedding photo. According to legend, the Babe met Helen on the day he arrived in Boston to join the Red Sox. They were married only three months after they met—he was 19, and she was 16. inning as pitcher. With a runner on second base, Cleveland’s Joe Jackson (known as “Shoeless Joe”) came up to bat.
Dunn, a businessman, knew when to call it quits. He talked with a group of men from Virginia who offered him $62,500 to own 49 percent of the club if it were to move to Richmond. Dunn made one more attempt to save his team. He made an appeal to the National Commission, the three-man group that ran baseball before there was a single baseball commissioner. Dunn asked the commission to ban the recruiting of International League players by major-league teams, and he even hoped the panel might agree to promote the International League to major-league status.
