Never try to “break down” an actor to tears by screaming at her or chastising her in front of others. And never use the exercises to exploit emotions that the actor is unwilling to share. Teachers who think that they have to be cruel in order to teach should go into therapy themselves and explore their destructive, sadistic tendencies. ” It is equally important for you to be supportive to the actors for all the times they take risks and chances. Remember, these exercises are for learning about the process, not for performance.
The Class Space I’ve never understood how some teachers can sell students on acting classes out of their home or apartment. Unless the instructor has a studio set aside that resembles a black box theater, the home is the worst place in the world to take acting classes. The distractions are countless, and the atmosphere works against the concentration needed for acting. The ideal place for an acting class is an actual stage, with theatrical-style lights and an audience area for the other students to watch.
Items that are particular to a scene or exercise can be brought in by students, but expecting an overburdened actor to bring in an entire houseful of props is unreasonable and cruel—and will typically lead to fewer students. Building a full set of furniture and a prop closet does not have to be an expensive venture. Many items can be gathered by putting out a request for donations or by visiting a local second-hand store or charity.
