The shadow jumped with him. He turned in terror, and let his breath out in relief as his heart began to beat once more. It had been his own shadow, thrown before him by the headlights of a silently approaching motorcar. He stepped aside to let the car pass, his heart still pounding, but already calming himself with the thought that there was certainly more danger from motor-cars on this unlighted lane than there could be from his nameless dread. The motor-car drew past him very slowly. It was a police car.
